Knitting Up Some Love: Sweaters for Rescued Hens

I opened up Google Reader this morning, saw this, and promptly dissolved into a puddle of mushy love. I have a soft spot for birds like nothing else, and I especially love chickens. Little Hen Rescue in Norfolk, UK, has amazing volunteers that knit little hen-sized sweaters to help rescued little ladies like this hen keep warm. Frequently, hens rescued from factory and free-range production facilities experience feather loss for a myriad of reasons related to their horrific experiences in forced confinement.

They’re stocked up on sweaters at the moment, but if you’d like to help out Little Hen Rescue and knit or sew up a few fleece hen sweaters yourself, e-mail littlehenrescue [at] aol [dot] com and ask to be added to their “jumper e-mail list” by including this phrase in your subject line.

wow, that’s the cutest thing i’ve heard about all week… and typically i’m very unhappy about animals wearing clothing.

Me too, about the clothing on animals that is. I’m particularly anti-leash-around-the-neck too.

As for cute, for me this ranks up in the top 5 of all time cutest things ever for me 🙂

They posted a (sort of) pattern! What a perfect idea for leftover yarn. I wonder if Rest.Q would need something like this.

i was thinking that too (rest.q) – altho kevin and karl couldn’t be any more dapper than they already are. i know they have some factory chicken rescues though that might need warmth…

I was thinking about that too! We should contact them and see if they could use something like this.

I knew there was another reason why I was lucky enough to find a sewing machine. I will contact RestQ and see if this is something they need.

And, that means going for a visit to see animals and the peeps! I will take any reason to get chicken cuddles.
