And on the 7th day, there was The Vegan Spoon

Whenever Stephen and I travel somewhere, I often spend quite a bit of time before the trip planning where to eat once we reach our destination. After all, there’s nothing worse than the hungry grumps, and especially a hungry, grumpy vegan. We’ve come to endearingly refer to our habit of seeking out all the best vegan places in a locale as “vegan tourism”, since we spend about half our time searching for and eating food wherever we happen to be. Let me tell you, when you go to a place like Portland, there are too many fabtastic places to miss if you aren’t well-informed about them. Knowing where to go so you don’t waste your time or end up resorting to an awful iceberg lettuce salad at some tofu-forsaken steakhouse is key to satisfying your inner munchie monster.

Resources like HappyCow, Food Fight Vegan Grocery’s PDX Guide, and VegPortland are invaluable when it comes to knowing where to go and what to eat (and how not to end up on the opposite side of town you mean to be on). But our most favourite resource by far was the stupendousness that is the Stumptown Vegans. Their blog was our bible to the whats and wherefores of vegan Portland. We got everything we wanted to know in one place, with some of the best advice and insights into the places we were interested in. The ladies over at Stumptown Vegans really know their stuff; we were never let down by any of their reviews. Can you tell we love ’em?

This got us to thinking that it would be just as fabulous to have something like the Stumptown Vegans in Vancouver. And lo and behold, The Vegan Spoon was created. Here’s a little bit about us:

Inspired by Portland’s Stumptown Vegans…and our penchant for vegan tourism wherever we visit, we thought it was about time to give y’all the scoop on the best places to grab a steamy cuppa, glean those knee-weakening sweets we all covet, and dig into some damn tasty chow in and around the gorgeous city of Vancouver.

So who are we? The Vegan Spoon is a duo of long-time vegans who like nothing better than to search out, create, eat, photograph, and reminisce about all things vegan and foodie. Almost nothing else gets us quite as excited as food does.

Like many of you, we’re serious about our food too. So much so that you’ll never see us sharing a plate of lo bak go. It’s just too good. We’re critical about our food, whether or not we’re the chefs or someone else is playing the host. We know nobody likes rubbery broccoli or stale rice. So we eat it all for you, and then we show and tell you what we know so you can decide for yourself where you’d like to satisfy your hunger and your thirst.

For the time being, our reviews will focus on Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, and we plan on posting new reviews on a weekly basis for the first several weeks. After that, the website will be updated regularly with new reviews, links to veg resources in and around Vancouver, and news about any vegan goings on around town. We’ll organize reviews by category so you’ll know what’s 100% vegan, who’s vegan-friendly, and where there’s a few vegan options to be had. And a handy Google Map of all the places we’ve reviewed is also in the works to show you just where to go and how to get there.

Come on over and tell us what you think! We’d love to hear what you have to say. Cookies would be nice too, if anyone’s offering.
